Severe Storms Expected to Close Out Louisiana’s Weekend

(KMDL-FM) Late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning were rather rowdy as far as Mother Nature is concerned across Louisiana. A strong cold front pushed across the state. Just as forecasters predicted, the cold front brought several severe weather watches and warnings and ultimately storm damage to many parts of Louisiana.

We will have a nice couple of days to recover from the storms, if there was damage in your location. Otherwise, the weekend across most of Louisiana should be spectacular. There will be many St Patrick’s Day-themed events happening across the state. One of the largest will be Lafayette’s Patty in the Parc. That event in Downtown Lafayette takes place on Saturday afternoon into the evening.

Saturday Forecast Perfect for Patty in the Parc – Large Crowd Expected

Based on the beautiful weather that is forecast for Saturday, many attendees to Patty in the Parc could wake up on Sunday morning looking like Christmas. They would have the green from their St. Patrick’s celebration and the red from what could be a potentially “bad burn day” as far as sunburns are concerned.

Once the revelry of Saturday is behind us, we will need to focus our attention on the potential for severe storms and another cold front approaching the area during the day on Sunday.

When Will The Next Threat of Severe Storms Arrive in Louisiana?

As of now, forecasters with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles are suggesting that the daylight hours of Sunday will be, for the most part, rain-free. However, as the day slides into Sunday evening, rain chances will increase, as will the threat of severe storms.

The Storm Prediction Center is putting at least the northern two-thirds of Louisiana at risk for severe storms during the evening hours on Sunday, extending into the early morning hours of Monday. Based on current forecast modeling, it does not appear as though this system will be quite as ferocious as the system that passed through the state on Wednesday.

Are Freezing Temperatures Expected in Louisiana Next Week?

However, forecasts do change over time, and there is still a lot of time between now and Sunday evening. So, do plan on check back with us for detailed information over the weekend. Forecast high temperatures on Monday across the I-10 corridor will be 25 to 30 degrees cooler than forecast highs on Sunday. The overnight temperatures on Monday night into Tuesday morning will drop into the middle 30s. But the current thinking is that South Louisiana residents will not be dealing with freezing temperatures.

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Shreveport is suggesting that freezing temperatures early Tuesday morning would be confined to the portions of the state along and north of I-20. Better enjoy the cool weather while you can because it won’t be too much longer until we’ll be discussing the heat index and heat advisories…
