Scam alert: Fake cops targeting Lafayette residents

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Residents are being urged to stay alert following reports of scam phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to be law enforcement officers.

According to authorities, the caller may:

  • Claim to be a Deputy with the Lafayette City Marshal’s Office
  • Say you have an outstanding warrant or legal issue
  • Demand immediate payment to “resolve” the situation

Here is a list of what to not do:

  • Do not provide personal or financial information
  • Do not send money or make any payments
  • Hang up immediately if you receive a suspicious call
