Lafayette house fire starts in fireplace; crews return later after rekindling

Lafayette firefighters tackled a house fire late Monday night. They reported it started in the fireplace of a home on South Hamner Avenue around 11:45 p.m. and quickly spread. They explained the homeowners noticed smoke and called 911 after safely exiting. Firefighters had the fire under control in 15 minutes, but not before the attic and living areas suffered significant damage.
