PETA alleges unsanitary conditions at UL Lafayette Primate lab

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) –An animal rights group is raising concerns about conditions at UL Lafayette’s New Iberia Research Center, claiming whistleblower video shows monkeys living in unsanitary conditions. The university disputes those claims and says the video misrepresents what is happening inside the facility.

PETA says the video shows monkeys housed in cramped spaces and displaying behaviors that could signal stress. The organization says it has filed complaints with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health, asking federal agencies to investigate the facility.

“In this video, you could see animals who were injured. You could see animals who had clearly been plucking their hair out, who had evidence of chronic stress… piles of feces and moldy food,” said Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA’s Chief Science Advisor for Primate Experimentation…
