Youngsville, LA (April 5, 2026) – The Youngsville Police Department wants to make sure residents understand what’s legal, what’s not, and how we’ll be handling enforcement regarding E-bike use in Youngsville.
Louisiana recognizes three classes of e-bikes:
- Class 1 — Pedal assist only; motor cuts off at 20 mph.
- Class 2 — Throttle assist (no pedaling required); motor cuts off at 20 mph.
- Class 3 — Pedal assist only; motor cuts off at 28 mph. Riders must be 12 or older, and a helmet is required for all riders and passengers.
Classes 1–3 require no registration, driver’s license, or insurance. All e-bike riders must still follow standard traffic laws under L.R.S. Title 32.
Not all electric bikes are e-bikes under the law. High-power models like Surrons and similar electric motorbikes do not qualify as e-bikes in Louisiana. Depending on the vehicle, operators may be required to have registration, a driver’s license, and insurance, and these vehicles are not permitted on bike paths or all public roads…
