Calamari and sushi from Soji
On my hunt to find the best sushi in Baton Rouge, Soji placed very high in my mental ranking.
I was joined by a few girlfriends, and we started with fried calamari for the table — an option that pleases most palates and is easy to share. This calamari was particularly tender, not as chewy as it is at most other restaurants, and the batter was light and perfectly seasoned. A delightful starter, and the whole table agreed.
Next was the Slammin’ Salmon roll. It had a lot going for it. Inside was avocado, kani salad, spicy tuna and tempura shrimp. It was wrapped in nori and topped with salmon, eel sauce, wasabi aiolo, jalapeño and crunchy garlic. I washed it all down with a Canebrake (My first taste of the local beer, by the way! It was solid.).
I’ve eaten at a lot of cheaper sushi places in my life, so this roll exceeded my expectations by far. Each ingredient’s flavor popped while still complementing the others. I want to go back. I heard there’s an omakase experience, so maybe that’ll be my next visit…
