St. Landry Parish curbs litter crisis

LAFAYETTE, LA. (KLFY) — St. Landry Parish Public Works Director Barry Soileau reported that littering remains a frequent issue across the parish, affecting neighborhoods, service roads and local bayous.

The parish recently completed a cleanup project at Bayou Mallet that cost more than $1,000,000. While the initial cleanup removed more than 220 tires from Bayou Mallet, Soileau informed the parish council that new debris was discovered in the waterway shortly after the project ended. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office and local solid waste officials are continuing efforts to monitor and penalize those responsible for illegal dumping.
