The process, which aims to bring abandoned properties back into use, is the subject of a lawsuit involving two rival applicants.

Johnston Street redevelopment prep. Mayor-President Monique Boulet and her administration are taking some of the first steps for the complete redevelopment of Johnston Street, scheduled to start in 2028. Part of that process is acquiring the right-of-way for all segments of the roadway. This ordinance addresses that for the segment of Johnston Street bordering downtown and the UL campus, from the railroad to East Lewis Street, granting LCG the ability to acquire all the property needed to complete that segment of the project. While landowners and LCG usually come to an agreement, the city could expropriate property from adjoining landowners in order to complete the work on the roadway. This segment of Johnston Street is slated for additional improvements focused on drainage under the roadway, aimed at preventing flooding in Lafayette’s Downtown…
