A 32-year-old Florida woman recently found herself in an ironic twist of fate after being arrested for petty theft. Upon her release from jail, she went to retrieve her towed car, only to discover that her belongings had been rifled through and her debit card was missing.
The woman had been arrested earlier that day on charges of petty theft. After securing her bail, she went to the towing yard expecting to reclaim her vehicle, but what she found instead was a breach of trust. Among her personal items, her debit card had vanished and was already being used, prompting her to contact the local sheriff’s office.
During a briefing, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd recounted the woman’s reaction to the theft of her card. “She called us back and said, ‘You know, I might have been arrested for petty theft and stealing somebody else’s stuff, but I really don’t like people stealing my stuff,’” he said, highlighting the hypocrisy of her statement.
It turned out that the individual who had lifted her card was not just any thief, but the very tow truck driver hired by the sheriff’s department to remove her car. The driver, who was supposed to be helping the woman reclaim her vehicle, had a troubling past that the towing company and the sheriff’s department overlooked.
