BARTOW, Fla. — Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a retired Polk County firefighter is reflecting on the seven days he spent supporting first responders at Ground Zero.
Donald Altman spent 30 years in the fire service, including 18 years as a volunteer with the Bartow Fire Department. Days after the attacks, he traveled to New York with a crew to help firefighters involved in the search and recovery effort.
