Bartow Police Search for Missing 16-Year-Old Jessie, Last Seen Near Britts Lane

A 16-year-old Bartow juvenile named Jessie has not been seen since Sunday, and police say they still don’t know where the teen might have gone. The Bartow Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward as the search continues into this week.

According to a Bartow Police Department Facebook post, Jessie was last seen in the area of Britts Lane on Sunday. Police said Jessie’s destination is unknown, and no clothing description was available at the time of the post, limiting what identifying details investigators could share publicly. The department asked anyone with information to call 863-534-5034 and ask for dispatch, and said it needs help locating Jessie quickly.

Why Police Must Move Fast on Juvenile Cases

Florida law gives officers little room to wait on cases like this. Under Florida Statute § 937.021, law enforcement agencies are barred from enforcing any mandatory waiting period before accepting a missing child report, and they must enter the child’s information into state and national crime databases within two hours of receipt, according to the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation. A separate statute, Florida Statute § 937.0201, automatically classifies any missing person under 18 as both a missing child and a missing endangered person, and calls for prompt investigation using appropriate resources, as Hoodline has previously reported.

A Sprawling County to Search

Bartow serves as the county seat of Polk County, a city of more than 23,600 residents situated roughly 39 miles east of Tampa and 50 miles southwest of Orlando near the headwaters of the Peace River, according to Living in Bartow Florida. The city sits at the crossroads of U.S. Route 98 and State Road 60, which brings significant daily commuter traffic through the area. Polk County itself is one of Florida’s largest counties geographically, home to more than 585,000 residents spread across urban centers like Lakeland and smaller municipalities like Bartow, per the City of Bartow. That geography matters in a case where a missing teen’s destination is unknown, since a journey of even a few miles from Britts Lane could put Jessie across a municipal or county line.

Residents looking to report information beyond calling Bartow police directly have other options. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement operates the Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse, which maintains a 24-hour hotline at 1-888-FL-MISSING (1-888-356-4774) for tips on missing children statewide. Community members in Polk County can also submit anonymous tips to Heartland Crime Stoppers by calling 1-888-400-TIPS (8477), using the P3tips mobile app, or filing online, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, which serves Polk, Hardee, and Highlands counties and offers cash rewards for eligible tips that lead to an arrest or indictment in those counties.
