Polk County sinkhole filled in; neighbors wary but not worried

HIGHLAND CITY, Fla. (WFLA) — After two days of trucks, cranes, workers, and news crews, the residents along Royal Crest Drive in Highland City finally have some quiet restored to their neighborhood.

“I thought that it was handled perfectly,” said Darrell Wheeler. “They happen a lot.”

Neighbors worry about knock-on effects of Polk County sinkhole

Wheeler lives down the street from where a sinkhole opened up in a neighbor’s front yard last week. He said he didn’t realize what was happening until he saw the news stations.

“Didn’t surprise me,” Wheeler recalled. “This is Lakeland, you know. And Florida. Sinkholes happen routinely.”

Neighbors noticed the sinkhole opening up around Saturday morning and alerted officials. After a few days of expansion , Polk County brought in crews to fill it in with trucks of sand on Tuesday and Wednesday. By Friday, the sand had started to settle and the county was out with radar, reviewing the property.
