Polk County School Board mechanic charged with DUI after boat falls off trailer, deputies say

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A man employed by the Polk County School Board as a mechanic was charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly abandoned an airboat that fell off a trailer in front of a sheriff’s office substation on Sunday, according to deputies.

The boat was blocking the road in front of the sheriff’s office substation along Sgt. Mary Campbell Way near Thompson Nursery Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

Jonathan Whitesides, 43, returned to pick up the boat with another man when he got into an argument about how the boat was being attached to a trailer, according to deputies.

A deputy told Whitesides to calm down before he allegedly charged at the deputy and yelled in his face, according to the sheriff’s office.

Whitesides allegedly had bloodshot eyes and balance issues, deputies said. He took two breath tests and allegedly had a blood alcohol content of .334 and .307, four times the legal limit, according to deputies.
