‘Multiple rapid shots’: Neighbor describes Lakeland shootout that killed 3-year-old

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — Three people were shot at a Lakeland apartment complex Monday night in a shootout between people in two cars, leaving two dead, including a 3-year-old.

Police said at about 6:30 p.m. at the Cambridge Cove Apartments, a white Dodge Challenger blocked the path of a Toyota RAV4. Two men from the Challenger got out and opened fire on the RAV4.

“At the scene, we recovered 19 .223 caliber spent casings and nine 9mm spent casings,” Police Chief Sam Taylor said.

Jacinto Montelongo lives at the apartment complex and heard the gunshots outside.

“We just heard one single shot and then we hear multiple rapid shots right after,” Montelongo said.

He ran outside because his children were playing outside with other children who live in the complex.

“I wasn’t thinking about where the shots were coming from, I was just thinking of getting these kids inside,” he said.

Bullet holes ripped through his car as he moved his children inside. He then went to the car where the shooting had started.
