Winter Haven man shot after breaking into Lake Wales home, police say

A Winter Haven man was shot by a homeowner after he broke into a Lake Wales residence late Tuesday night, Lake Wales police said.

In a news release Wednesday, police said officers responded to a home in the 700 block of South Scenic Highway at 11:35 p.m. after a resident called to report he had shot an intruder and was holding him at gunpoint.

When police arrived, they found Cameron McGuire, 34, in the home with a gunshot wound to his leg. The resident told police he woke up to his dog barking and armed himself to investigate. He then saw McGuire holding some belongings of a child who lived in the home, the release said.

The resident told police he yelled “freeze,” but McGuire continued walking toward him, so he fired once, striking him in the leg, according to the release.

Police said investigators determined McGuire climbed through a kitchen window in the rear of the residence. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released. He was charged with burglary to an occupied dwelling and theft then booked into the Polk County Jail.
