Capt. Chuck Rogers (813-918-8356): Capt. Chuck reports we’re in a typical winter fishing pattern. Trout have moved into deeper residential canals and while live shrimp can be effective, he’s been doing better using soft plastics on jig heads. The baits allow his anglers to cover more water faster. Work them slowly and on or near the bottom in at least 6 to 8 feet of water. Expect to catch more throw-backs than keepers. He hasn’t been fishing the northern part of the bay, but word is there are a lot of small rat reds around the creeks above the Courtney Campbell Causeway. Residential docks have been holding a few small drum below the Gandy Bridge. For whatever reason, he’s not seeing many sheepshead around docks and other structure. Snook are stacked up in the marinas around St. Pete, but they are just hanging motionless and not interested in taking baits of any kind.
