Lakeland Convicted Felon Charged with Possessing Firearm and Ammunition

A Lakeland convicted felon was charged with possessing a firearm and ammunition.

The United States Attorney had recently announced the filing of a criminal complaint charging 27-year-old Taqiy Lewis, of Lakeland, with possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. If convicted, Lewis faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison.

According to the criminal complaint, on December 24, 2020, M.C., a 70-year-old woman, was outside her Lakeland home with her family, including young children. At approximately 5:30 p.m., Lewis and others engaged in a shootout just outside M.C.’s residence. M.C. was struck twice and killed. A.L., a thirteen-year-old child, was also shot and wounded.

More than two years later, on February 9, 2023, during an unrelated investigation, ATF special agents and officers from the Lakeland Police Department recovered a Kahr CM9 9mm pistol while executing a search warrant.
