Man who stole gold bars from Tampa UPS driver caught trying to flee country: deputies

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man who Hillsborough County deputies said was caught on camera last month stealing a package of gold bars was taken into custody after trying to flee the country.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released doorbell camera video of the incident to the public in early March, and said the suspect was later identified as 33-year-old Vitalijs Apetenoks.

In the video, Apetenoks could be seen walking up to a UPS driver as the worker arrived at a home on Aire Place in Tampa to drop off a package containing $20,000 worth of gold bars, authorities explained.

Apetenoks then handed the driver an ID, claiming the package was his, the sheriff’s office said. The driver checked the ID and handed over the package. However, deputies said the ID turned out to be fraudulent and the rightful owner of the gold bars later reported the theft…
