LAKELAND — Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, the most venerable of Frank Lloyd Wright’s 13 structures at Florida Southern College, remains architecturally fresh but is structurally ailing.
On the morning of April 30, a crew of workers stood inside the building, applying plaster to ceilings, shoring up spots where material had crumbled loose. Plastic sheets covered the chapel’s bracingly red seats for protection.
The scene offered a reminder that the structures designed by the nation’s most revered architect provide a lasting boon to the college, enticing potential students and attracting thousands of tourists a year. But the landmarks also present a burden…
