New ALDI Coming Soon to Lake Wales – What’s Happening at the Former Winn-Dixie?

A new ALDI is coming to Lake Wales, Florida, at 1860 State Road 60 East—but the building isn’t new. This site was home to a Winn-Dixie supermarket that closed its doors in November 2024. Now, the space is being reworked to welcome ALDI sometime in 2025.

The closure of the longtime grocer left a visible void for local shoppers, but signs point to a relatively quick turnaround. The store is already listed as “Coming Soon” on ALDI’s official site, and interior work has been underway for months.

From Citrus Groves to Grocery Chains

This stretch of State Road 60 was nothing but citrus groves back in 1957, as seen in historic aerials. By 1996, the large retail structure now housing ALDI had already taken shape, part of the wider development of the East Gate area.

Over time, this site became a shopping staple, with Winn-Dixie serving local residents for decades. The building sits on over five acres and shares space with Rural King and several smaller businesses. Across Hunt Brothers Road sits a massive Walmart Supercenter, highlighting just how retail-heavy this corridor has become.

What’s ALDI Planning?

Rather than tearing the building down, ALDI is splitting the space into two separate retail units. One will be occupied by the discount grocery chain, while the other is up for lease. The full building spans about 47,950 square feet, and it’s listed under the parcel ID 28-30-07-940851-000041…
