Study: Financial stress taking a toll on young Tampa residents

TAMPA, Fla. (BLOOM) — Financial uncertainty is affecting the mental, physical, and emotional health of Tampa Bay residents, particularly younger generations, according to new data from Northwestern Mutual’s 2025 Planning & Progress Study.

The survey found that 65% of adults in the Tampa Bay area reported feeling depressed or anxious due to financial concerns. Nearly 6 in 10 (58%) said money worries have disrupted their sleep, and 37% said the stress has made them feel physically ill.

More than half of respondents (57%) said financial pressures led them to skip social events, and 47% said it has affected their performance at work. Among those in relationships, 60% said finances have strained their partnerships…
