Starting from noon today until 6 PM EDT this evening, the advisory warns of heat index values shooting up to a scorching 110 degrees. The affected areas include Sumter, Pinellas, Polk, Hardee, and various coastal and inland regions, spanning cities like Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Bradenton.
With such extreme heat, locals are advised to wear light, airy clothing and limit physical exertion to the cooler hours of early morning or evening. The NWS stresses the risks associated with the high heat and humidity, which may induce heat-related illnesses without proper precaution. “Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” the NWS statement read, and those working outside are particularly vulnerable. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration suggests that outdoor workers take regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces to mitigate risks.
For those unfamiliar with the symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, the NWS advises to be vigilant and act immediately upon recognition of signs.
