New report reveals Lake Bonny infrastructure to be ‘insufficient’ following Hurricane Milton wreckage

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A new report has revealed why Lake Bonny’s current storm water system is incapable of handling major storm events.

Following the impact of Hurricane Milton in October 2024 and its lasting effects, the City of Lakeland tasked infrastructure consulting firm AECOM to find the source of the flooding and solutions to relieve the problem.

According to the report, the current culverts and ditches being are undersized and the pump’s capacity is limited.

“The existing pumping system is limited to 18.56 cubic feet per second (cfs) but effectively operates at 9.7 cfs to mitigate flooding between Lake Bonny and Lake Parker,” per the study findings…
