Several CSX rail crossing closures in one long stretch of Lakeland could overlap this week

CSX is closing down railroad crossings this week along a significant stretch of U.S. 98 South in Lakeland, and it could make crossing 98 particularly difficult for a few days.

“Each affected crossing will be closed for approximately three days while crews complete the necessary repairs,” the city said in a news release. “Work at each location will include track replacement, repaving, and asphalt curing before the crossing can safely reopen to traffic.”

The first set of closures were scheduled to start Aug. 4, although the roads were still open as of 11 a.m.:

  • The crossing at Commerce Point Drive, which connects U.S. 98 with Combee Road at little north of Edgewood Drive.
  • And the crossing at Sylvester Road, which U.S. 98 with a residential area just to the east of the tracks. That neighborhood is also accessed via South Crystal Lake Drive.

Those closures are estimated to end Aug. 7…
