Hillsborough animal shelter celebrates over 150,000 pets saved

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hillsborough County’s Pet Resource Center celebrates a major milestone with over 150,000 pets being saved since the shelter committed to improving its live-release rate 13 years ago.

In 2012, the euthanasia rate at the shelter showed nearly two-thirds of pets brought to the shelter being euthanized, amounting to about 12,000 dogs and cats being euthanized in that year alone.

Today, the Pet Resource Center boasts a live-release rate among the highest in the nation, at 90%. Less than three years ago, in October 2022, the shelter had saved the lives of 100,000 pets; now it celebrates the lives of 150,000 and counting…
