Hillsborough school board calls on Florida to change Schools of Hope law

As pressures ramp up from all directions, the Hillsborough County school board passed a proclamation pushing back on a new law that allows some charter schools known as Schools of Hope to move into underused district spaces.

The 5-1 vote, with one member absent, came less than a week after Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas was booed in Tampa while telling an audience of school board members from across the state that they were being put “on notice,” and that the state could shut down districts over the issue.

The Hillsborough school board’s proclamation urges the Legislature to amend the law, which passed at the end of the last special session with much left undefined…
