A proposed sand mine next to the Saddlebag Lake Resort near Lake Wales is set for an appeal hearing on March 17 in Bartow after the County Commission’s regularly scheduled meeting.
The Mammoth Grove Mine project team requested an appeal of the decision by the Planning Commission, which denied the proposal by a 6-1 vote in December. The applicant had requested a conditional use to begin mining in the area.
The proposed mine and a packing plant would be on land on both sides of State Road 60 near the 55-plus Saddlebag Lake Resort.
Has opposition to the mine diminished?
