Divineya Smith’s weightlifting career is over, but talk about going out on top. The Haines City senior set a personal record on her final lift in the bench press, which was good enough to give her the state title in the unlimited weight class in the Traditional competition.
Going into the meet, however, she tried not thinking about placement.
“I wouldn’t say I was confident,” she said. “I think when people ask me if like what place I was going to get , I always said second, second or third because I didn’t want to be cocky, and like I didn’t want to jinx myself. That was my really big thing — not jinxing myself because what if I say first and then just don’t. That morning I had literally had told my mom I don’t think I’ll get first because I just didn’t. I felt good, but I didn’t feel amazing so it wasn’t like the best feeling ever. But I felt I did feel good.”…
