LAKELAND — George Jenkins coach Curtis Williams felt an uneasiness when thinking about Saturday’s track meet. He was quite concerned that Winter Haven would dethrone his Eagles, making this the first year that a team other than George Jenkins was crowned county champions since 2018.
Williams was breathing a heavy sigh of relief as the meet was wrapping up. In the closest finishes in recent years, George Jenkins prevailed over Winter Haven and the rest of the field to claim its sixth consecutive girls title in the Polk County Track and Field Championships at George Jenkins High School. The event was held in 2020 or 2021 because of Covid.
George Jenkins finished with 182.5 points to win by 13.5 points. Led by Tori Gibson’s three wins, Jenkins won six individual events. The Blue Devils finished with 169 points and had three athletes win five individual events. They also won two relays…
