Raven Ridge Wildlife Center’s unexpected winter rush

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– At Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Lancaster County, “Pretty much every cage, every incubator that we have, has a patient in it,” says Rehabber Tracie Young.

That includes patients like this juvenile bald eagle, which was hit by a truck on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

“The eagle was brought to us. We went to a local veterinarian that we work with just to get X-rays to see what we were dealing with. Definitely, the wrist area is shattered, has a fractured pelvis, and the beak is chipped.”

The eagle is receiving pain medications and fluids. Because the bird can’t stand due to the pelvis fracture, Tracie has to help the eagle keep clean.

While we were there Tracie also treated a groundhog suffering from mange.

“They lose a vast amount of weight during hibernation, but now you have mange on top of it, which makes it worse. So not only emaciated, but severely dehydrated.”
