CHEP thrift store near Rising Sun holds grand opening

RISING SUN — For the estimated 275 people who attended the grand opening of the CHEP thrift store northeast of Rising Sun on Saturday, the enormous building housing the shop is likely the first thing that they noticed when turning off Route 1 onto the 100 block of Greenmount Road.

After passing a couple of food/drink trucks on the property, it’s likely that they crossed paths with, or at least saw, Perryville resident Jack Berkeridge, who is CEO of CHEP, and Brekke Autry, who serves as director of finance and marketing of the non-profit group that originated in 1990 and is headquartered in Perry Point.

Berkeridge and Autry manned one of the vendor booths on the premises Saturday. For attendees who stopped and chatted with them, it’s likely that they learned that CHET stands for Communities Helping Empower Patriots, People and Professionals and that 100 percent of proceeds generated through the sales of the donated merchandise inside that 10,125-square-foot building will be spent to help those beneficiary groups…
