State residents in Dauphin County voiced their concerns about the restart of Three Mile Island last night to the people in charge of the project. During a public meeting, representatives from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Constellation Energy were asked how people would be protected if something at the facility went wrong. Many in the crowd said a better safety plan is needed after the partial nuclear meltdown in 1979. Commission members said they can’t promise that a partial meltdown will never happen, but safety is their top concern. Three Mile Island’s Unit 1 nuclear reactor, now known as the Crane Clean Energy Center, is expected to restart in 2027, which is a year earlier than initially planned, according to Constellation Energy.
