What’s Going Around: Flu, COVID, strep, asthma issues

UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics is seeing a flu cases, hand, foot and mouth, viral upper respiratory infections with cough and croup.

Providers there say parents should be especially vigilant as these illnesses can spread quickly among children, particularly in daycare and school settings. Watch for symptoms like fever, sore throat, persistent cough and difficulty breathing. They say you should consult your pediatrician if symptoms worsen or linger.

And as flu season ramps up, they say it’s also a good time to consider flu vaccination for children. The CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that everyone 6 months and older receive a flu shot annually, ideally by the end of October.
