As the state budget impasse continues, two elected York County row officers say their offices will stop sending payments to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania until a budget is passed, according to a news release.
York County Clerk of Courts Dan Byrnes and York County Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court Bryan Tate made the announcement on Tuesday, Oct. 21 to withhold the future payments to the state. Those payments come from fees collected for a variety of services, such for marriage licenses and court filings.
“In York County we are maintaining a strict budget, but Pennsylvania’s state budget is 16 weeks overdue and counting,” Byrnes said in the news release. “That’s irresponsible fiscal stewardship at best, and we the taxpayers of York County demand better. The Clerk of Courts Office has already sent over half a million dollars to the commonwealth since this budget impasse began. If the state is not responsible enough to pass a budget, then they cannot be entrusted with York Countians’ hard-earned money.”…
