Imagine you’re entering the realm not of the supernatural, but of the super-digital—the heart of the modern digital transformation. The venue? A nondescript office park, but inside, a fortress dedicated to preserving our digital future. This is where I took a journey recently, into the bustling, whirring world of data centers, just as a massive $6 billion development investment hit Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Data centers might not appear glamorous from the outside, but step inside and you’re at the nerve center of the internet. During a tour of one such center in suburban Harrisburg, led by Olarifi CEO Andy Coochinowski, I was struck by the irony of how something as seemingly ethereal as cloud computing relies on such palpably robust physical infrastructure. Row upon row of metal cages buzzed with computers, each cage a hive of activity, with cables and lights sprawling like veins and nerves. The scale and intensity of the operations were matched only by the stringent security measures—multiple gates, registration processes, and the big rule: no food, drinks, or smoking.
