Lancaster County hatchery rebuilds after summer floods destroy thousands of trout

MOUNT JOY, Pa. — After heavy flooding swept through parts of Lancaster County this summer, one local hatchery found itself completely underwater, both literally and financially.

The Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA), a volunteer-run hatchery in Mount Joy, was hit hard when flash floods tore through the property, damaging pens, washing away supplies and killing nearly all of the trout being raised for local streams.

“In the beginning part of the entrance, there were big, large ruts you couldn’t get vehicles down here. We had to basically bring in a bunch of dirt and stone; we had a little bobcat.”…
