DA drops DUI charge against driver who ‘blacked out,’ fatally struck woman checking mail

Prosecutors on Thursday dropped the most serious charges against a Dauphin County driver who fatally struck a woman in Lebanon County in 2023 in exchange for the man pleading guilty.

Michael Zimmerman, 64, of Harrisburg, pleaded guilty to an added count of involuntary manslaughter while prosecutors dropped vehicular homicide and DUI-related charges in connection with the death of 51-year-old Jill Staub in August 2023.

Zimmerman was driving on Route 22 in East Hanover Township when he drifted left, struck the center concrete barrier, and then veered right — directly into Staub who was on the side of the road checking a mailbox…
