Amtrak worker was clearing snow before train hit, killed him in Lancaster County

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — An Amtrak employee killed last month was clearing snow from a railroad switch when a train hit him, according to a safety bulletin from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

During the Feb. 23 incident, Jeremy Charles, 39, of Holtwood, was using a backpack blower to clear the snow from tracks near Greenfield Road in East Lampeter Township, the FRA said. He and a group of maintenance workers were using a system called train approach warning, where a designated person alerts others to leave the track at least 15 seconds before a train moving at maximum speed can pass their location.

Charles had four and a half years of experience with Amtrak.
