Driver killed in Lancaster County wrong-way crash involving PSP, EMS vehicles was DUI, report says

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — The driver who was killed in a wrong-way Route 283 crash involving an ambulance and a Pennsylvania State Police vehicle in February was under the influence, a crash report filed Tuesday shows.

Heather Bare, 48, of New Salem, was DUI when she hit a Life Lion EMS vehicle while going the wrong way on the highway in East Hempfield Township on Feb. 21, according to State Police at Lancaster.

The EMS vehicle’s emergency lights were turned on to alert Bare, who was driving a 2026 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, that she was going the wrong way, PSP said. The driver of the EMS vehicle crossed into the other lane when Bare’s vehicle hit them. She kept going, but the EMS vehicle was able to pull onto the side of the road.

Bare then crashed head-on into a State Police vehicle, the report said. Her vehicle then spun, hitting the police vehicle again. Bare, the Trooper whose vehicle she hit, and a passenger in the Trooper’s vehicle were all trapped in the wreckage…
