Lancaster County resident loses $12K in jury duty scam, South Carolina woman charged

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Lancaster County resident was scammed out of $12,000 by depositing the money into a Bitcoin ATM after being told they missed jury duty, police said.

The stolen money was converted to Bitcoin and was eventually deposited into 36-year-old Veronica Oliva’s PayPal account, the charges filed by Manheim Township Police said.

Transaction records obtained during the investigation showed that the Bitcoin was then allegedly deposited into Oliva’s bank account, according to the criminal complaint. The total amount of the deposit was $1,686.63.

Police stated the man reported the scam to them on Jan. 30, saying he received a call from a “Sgt. Dean Mitchell” who claimed to be a Sheriff and that there was a warrant for his arrest after he missed jury duty…
