Great-horned owl adopts baby at Lancaster County rescue center

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Timing was everything to turn two strangers into a family at Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Lancaster County.

Last week, the center took in an adult female great-horned owl that it rescued from an electrical fence. She showed signs of nesting, the center said, but she wasn’t able to fly or stand.

Two days later, it took in a baby great-horned owl that was found at the bottom of a stairway, too small to be out of the nest and without a parent to protect it.

“Knowing the female great-horned owl was still in nesting mode, and the baby owl had lost its mother, our team decided to take a chance and pair the two,” the center said. “This was a risk we were willing to take to allow her to continue her mothering role, ensuring the baby owl would not imprint on humans and could learn from its own species.”
