East Lansing City Council to consider changes to civil rights law

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The East Lansing City Council will meet Tuesday night to consider significant changes to the Human Rights Ordinance.

The proposed changes to the ordinance would prevent the commission from investigating complaints as well as producing any findings or taking punitive action against any person or business it determines has violated the civil rights law. They would also exempt the city, its employees, departments and contractors from enforcement or review.

In a document justifying the changes, city officials argue the city council, as a legislative body, does not have judicial powers and as such can’t extend such power to boards and commissions…
