East Lansing councilmember disputes mayor’s denial of harassment claims

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — East Lansing Councilmember Kerry Ebersole Singh said Mayor Erik Altmann’s comments describing sexual harassment and verbal abuse allegations against City Manager Robert Belleman as “unfounded” do not represent the City Council as a whole.

“What the independent investigation concluded is that the complaints did not rise to the level of a legal or policy violation,” Ebersole Singh said in a statement. “That is one threshold — it is not a verdict on whether the conduct occurred or whether it was acceptable.”

In the statement — shared with 6 News on Tuesday and posted to social media last week — Ebersole Singh added that she believed Belleman’s conduct “required corrective action.”

Erica Dziedzic-Hernandez, a grants coordinator for the city of East Lansing, publicly accused Belleman of sexual harassment during Tuesday’s city council meeting.
