Ingham County Sheriff’s Office warns of scammers posing as deputies

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving callers posing as law enforcement officers in an attempt to collect money.

According to the sheriff’s office, scammers have claimed to be “Sgt. Johnson,” “Sgt. Hicks” or “Cpl. Ryan Hagar,” and said they work for the department. Authorities said none of those names are associated with the sheriff’s office.

In one reported incident, a scammer instructed a resident to drive to the sheriff’s office and turn themselves in for an alleged jury warrant. The caller instructed the resident to meet them in the parking lot and threatened to impound the person’s vehicle and arrest them if they failed to pay a fine, police said…
