Owosso gathers for annual pride festival despite protests

OWOSSO, Mich. (WLNS) — Community members in Owosso started Pride Month early on Saturday, holding the 4th annual Pride in the Park Festival, amid concerns from local religious organizations.

The celebration, held in Curwood Castle Park, was the topic of discussion at multiple Owosso City Council meetings, gaining attention from protestors who said the drag show performance is not suitable for children.

Remington Rose, the drag show performer, says the pride festival is a chance for the LGBTQ+ community to be themselves without being ostracized, and says her performance is far from inappropriate.

“I absolutely think this event is family-friendly. As you can see, there is bubbles happening. There is glitter, there’s dancing, there’s story times. This is everything children would see in school, and it’s just because it’s me that it’s not okay to some people, and I think that’s wrong,” Rose said.
