Michigan needs to ‘get scrappy’ and ‘creative’ to address housing crisis, lawmaker says

LANSING, MI – For three years, Smokie Cushman did not have housing in Lansing.

At times, she lived in a tent at an encampment until a judge ordered it be cleared out last year, and the residents were provided temporary housing for six weeks.

Cushman, who secured a stable home this spring, joined state Democratic lawmakers at the Michigan Capitol on Wednesday, June 3 to push the Legislature to address the housing crisis, increase funding for housing programs and help a growing number of people experiencing homelessness…
