LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – A Michigan woman could be among the first to deliver a baby under the state’s new surrogacy law when she gives birth in five weeks.
Lily Smith is carrying a baby for a California family. When that baby arrives at McLaren Hospital, it will likely be the first surrogacy birth in Ingham County, and potentially the first in the entire state of Michigan.
New law ends decades-long ban
Since 1988, paid surrogacy agreements were a crime in the state of Michigan. That changed on April 2, 2025, when the Michigan Family Protection Act took effect.
