MICHIGAN — Another chance for strong to severe storms exists today across southeast Michigan, with forecasters watching radar this morning and early afternoon for pop-up storms capable of carrying a damaging wind risk. These storms are expected to be isolated in nature, meaning most of southeast Michigan has a better chance at staying dry today.
Damaging winds up to 60 mph will be the primary concern, driven by a decent environment of downdraft CAPE, the ideal ingredient for localized downbursts and microbursts within any storms that do develop.
Limited Severity Zone Covers Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw
A Level 1 limited severity zone spans southeast Michigan, including Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Lansing, and Jackson, representing the primary area of concern for today’s isolated storm risk. This zone reflects a lower overall severity level but still carries the potential for localized damaging wind gusts.
A Level 0 thunderstorm-only zone extends farther north into Gaylord and Alpena, indicating storms in that area are not expected to reach the same damaging wind potential as the southeastern part of the state.
