LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — It’s the first day of school for students at Lansing Public Schools and it’s the first time students will get a chance to go to class at the new Willow School campus.
Crews demolished the old building in early 2024 to make way for the new build. Ahead of the first day, 6 News had the chance to get a peek of what the campus looks like.
The decision to rebuild the school was largely community based, and while the school is only housing sixth graders this year in the middle school wing, it will continue to expand to seventh and eighth grade in the coming years as the group ages. School principal Nicole Beard said the years without the school were a challenge.
“When we merged two schools, we merged Willow and Riddell three years ago … it was a bit of a challenge with some spacing and then having initially two sets of families, two sets of staff and two sets of students,” said Beard. “Before you even start to approach instruction, we have to build those relationships.”…
