UPDATE: This story has been updated to include information about the inspection findings provided by Scott Bean, city spokesman.
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — City inspectors visited the Colonial Woods Senior Community Thursday and inspected the carport that collapsed Tuesday.
City Spokesman Scott Bean says the collapsed structure was properly caution taped off.
“While onsite, the inspector inspected all carports within the property and found no safety or structural issues to report,” Bean says.
Bean says the “building inspector could not make an official determination” of the cause of the collapse. But said the management company’s claim snow build up caused the collapse “could very well be a contributing factor, be he [the building inspector] did not make that official.”
The city’s Code Compliance Department does inspect carports, Bean confirms. Concerns about the structures are noted in correction notices sent by the department to property owners. The notices also inform property owners repairs may require permits. In addition, if the structural concerns noted by an inspector are significant enough, Building Safety Department officials are brought in to inspect as well.
